a place to call home

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.”

Genesis 1:28

God is a great and awesome God is he not? Here in Genesis, in the creation narrative, the Bible says God “blessed” his creation. And this wasn’t out of any merit on our own or from any goodness we could bring. Out of mercy and a love for us, his creation, did he bless us.

Immediately following is a command, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.” So here we see that this loving and awesome creator gives us the capacity to receive his blessing and live in fellowship with him. Yet we are bearers of his image, the people sent forth to subdue the earth in the name of his greatness because we recognize the blessing.

Do you find yourself believing that? Do you doubt that you have the capability to be God’s witness to the world and to spread to the world, or more closely, your world with the image of your Creator? Look again closely at Gen. 1:26 and you see the Triune God working in the creation act saying, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” See, we’re not just decorated dust existing for ourselves; we are images of God, created after his likeness.

So when Jesus says, “Follow me,” we understand he wants us to do as he does, be as he is and show the world the Savior through the transformation the Spirit brought about in us. That’s a heavy task for anyone and I know it may seem overwhelming. But you are created in the image of the magnificent Creator, not decorated dust meant to be hidden under a bowl. So, as our Savior says, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Mt. 5:16)
